Local Areas of Interest:

Often seen as one of the finest examples of the so called "white villages" of Andalucia, Mijas has managed to retain much of its tradition & old world charm. Made up of narrow winding streets & white washed houses arranged in tiers, the village is split into several levels with fantastic views of the coast.

As with most old Spanish towns Mijas has an extended municipality, which in this case includes a 12 kilometre coastal stretch known as Mijas Costa which is has become one of the most popular destinations on the whole coast. Here you can find numerous activities to suit everyone sailing, windsurfing, cycling, tennis, horse riding, jet ski, go-karting. Especially for the children, there is Mijas Water Park not to be missed! www.aquamijas.com

Weekly horse racing at the Hipodromo Costa del Sol returns to Sunday mornings as the weather cools down, instead of the summertime schedule of Saturday evenings. The races begins at 10.30 at the custom-built racetrack which is a popular spot with the general public as well as racing fans as there are restaurants and bars aplenty which are open all day even though the weekly racing lasts for around 3 hours. www.hipodromomijas.com

Fuengirola is probably most famous for its five miles of sandy beaches with magnificent views of the Mediterranean and sweeping coastline. The beaches known as Boliches - Gaviotas and Torreblanca hold a European blue flag.

Follow the shopping baskets on Tuesdays and you will find yourself at the largest and liveliest street market on the coast. There is also a Saturday boot sale here with the predictably intriguing selection of items on sale.

There is certainly no shortage of things to do for holidaymakers in Fuengirola, ranging from such family fun activities as Aqua Park, a trip to the zoo dolphin cruises and a host of sea sports to a leisurely sight seeing tour on a horse-drawn carriage.

Annual fiestas here include the feast of the Virgin del Carmen in July when local fisherman carry an effigy of the Virgin out to sea, while the colourful feria takes place in October and is the time when the town really comes to life with flamenco, fino... (dry sherry) and fun which carries on from dawn to dusk for a week.

Zoos aren't what they used to be, fortunately. You won't find miserable animals pacing up and down shoebox cages, clinging to solitary branches or paddling around in sad puddles at Fuengirola's new, visitor and animal-friendly zoo. Wherever you look in this pioneer zoo, the only thing between you and the animals are natural barriers like bridges and riverbanks, or bulletproof windows that allow you to get right up close, even to razor-sharp crocodile teeth.

Perhaps the greatest innovation, though, is the "moonlight visit". Throughout July and August the zoo stays open until 1.00 am allowing visitors to observe the more nocturnally-active species, such as leopards, flying foxes and porcupines. The forest paths are lit with artificial moonlight and the air filled with a piped forest soundtrack, all adding to the Disney-theme park feel to the place.

Extra fun for the kids is provided, with a large play area, including a miniature farm. And there are absolutely no problems for those with disabilities as the zoo grounds are mostly flat, and free from all architectural barriers.

Over the years, Torremolinos has evolved as an attractive and appealing resort, noted for its clean sandy beaches, wide choice of hotels and restaurants and unparalleled variety of entertainment, activities and nightlife available. Situated west between Torremolinos centre and Benalmadena is the old fishing village of La Carihuela which is a delightful area of picturesque simple houses and bougainvillea clad patios where old men play dominoes and drink anis.
