Local Areas of Interest:

Plan your next visit to Costa del Sol from our short tourist guide
Fuengirola is probably most famous for its five miles of sandy beaches with magnificent views of the Mediterranean and sweeping coastline. The beaches known as Boliches - Gaviotas and Torreblanca hold a European blue flag.

Follow the shopping baskets on Tuesdays and you will find yourself at the largest and liveliest street market on the coast. There is also a Saturday boot sale here with the predictably intriguing selection of items on sale.
There is certainly no shortage of things to do for holidaymakers in Fuengirola, ranging from such family fun activities as Aqua Park, a trip to the zoo dolphin cruises and a host of sea sports to a leisurely sight seeing tour on a horse-drawn carriage.

Annual fiestas here include the feast of the Virgin del Carmen in July when local fisherman carry an effigy of the Virgin out to sea, while the colourful feria takes place in October and is the time when the town really comes to life with flamenco, fino... (dry sherry) and fun which carries on from dawn to dusk for a week.

Zoos aren't what they used to be, fortunately. You won't find miserable animals pacing up and down shoebox cages, clinging to solitary branches or paddling around in sad puddles at Fuengirola's new, visitor and animal-friendly zoo. Wherever you look in this pioneer zoo, the only thing between you and the animals are natural barriers like bridges and riverbanks, or bulletproof windows that allow you to get right up close, even to razor-sharp crocodile teeth.

Perhaps the greatest innovation, though, is the "moonlight visit". Throughout July and August the zoo stays open until 1.00 am allowing visitors to observe the more nocturnally-active species, such as leopards, flying foxes and porcupines. The forest paths are lit with artificial moonlight and the air filled with a piped forest soundtrack, all adding to the Disney-theme park feel to the place.

Extra fun for the kids is provided, with a large play area, including a miniature farm. And there are absolutely no problems for those with disabilities as the zoo grounds are mostly flat, and free from all architectural barriers.

Marbella's motto is "A Way of Life" and, certainly, this luxurious resort town seems to have it all and is, once again, rising to the fore as a favourite location with the rich and famous, as well as more ordinary folk who are willing to pay just a little bit extra for southern Spain's answer to St Tropez.

But Marbella has a down to earth side as well, an air of individuality which can be best appreciated by exploring back streets in the old part of town. One of the prettiest places is the fabled 'Orange Square' which is located just off the main street in the older district and is also home to the 16th century town hall and tourist office where you can pick up a detailed map and visitor information.

For the ultimate in coastal charisma it would be hard to beat Puerto Banús, just west of the town of Marbella. This is the place to be pampered yacht side and watch the world go by or window shop at one of several of the world renowned fashion houses and boutiques. The port has grown considerably over the years and now includes a casino, commercial shopping centre, El Corte Ingles department store, marine observatory and a multi cinema with films shown in their original soundtrack. Chinese, Argentinean, Italian, Thai, the choice of restaurants is endless and recently open, the famous Hard Rock Cafe. The nightlife is buzzing here with alfresco bars, piano clubs and discos which are open dusk until dawn.

Further along the N340 highway, close to Estepona lies one of the world's most unique nature parks, by the name of Selwo. The park is based on the African safari park idea and houses 2000 animals in semi-wild conditions. In all, Selwo provides a unique and fantastic experience for the whole family.
